Orthodontics For Adults Toronto ON

Adult Man With Braces

People of all ages can benefit from orthodontic treatment— in fact, nearly one in five orthodontic patients is over the age of 21. With the development of more discreet treatment options such as clear braces and aligners, adults can feel confident going about their daily lives while their teeth are corrected subtly and comfortably.

Our Adult Orthodontic Services

While adults can achieve the same beautiful, straight smiles as children and teens, orthodontic treatment often takes a bit longer. Adult treatment requires careful planning and close monitoring by Dr. Chong or Dr. Voudouris, as there are several factors unique to mature patients. Because the jawbone is fully developed, it may be slightly less responsive to tooth movement, and conditions such as gum disease—more common in adults—can also affect treatment progress.

At Innovative Orthodontics, we offer a range of discreet, esthetic appliance options designed to address the specific needs and concerns of adult patients.

Before Treatment

Before beginning orthodontic treatment, we will assess underlying misalignment issues and pre-existing dental problems. We recommend that any oral health issues, such as tooth decay and gum disease, be addressed before orthodontic treatment.

Types of Appliances for Adults

Which appliance is used on your teeth is a joint decision made by you and your orthodontist. At your appointment with either Dr. Chong or Dr. Voudouris, you will discuss your options, oral health, and aesthetic goals to determine which system is right for you. Options include:

  • Conventional metal braces: Usually reserved for the most severe orthodontic problems because they are the “train tracks” that are easily visible.
  • Clear or tooth-colored ceramic braces: A far less visible version of conventional braces made of ceramic that blends with your teeth’s color, but has a wire across the front.
  • Invisalign® removable, clear aligners: These clear, removable aligner trays are nearly invisible and can be removed for eating, drinking, and cleaning.
  • Lingual adult braces, which are fixed to the back of the teeth: Lingual braces have brackets fastened to the back of the teeth rather than the front, but only work for specific types of correction.

Benefits of Adult Braces

While many of our patients first consider getting adult braces because they are self-conscious about their smile, there are multiple benefits to adult orthodontics:

  • Braces for adults reduce the risk of tooth decay and gum disease because it is easier to keep your teeth clean when they are straight.
  • Bite issues are corrected, alleviating pain and reducing teeth grinding and jawbone deterioration.
  • Braces for adults can make it easier to chew food properly, leading to better digestion and healthier eating habits for improved overall health.
  • Improved self-confidence is one of the main reasons adults get braces regardless of age.
